Jelly
Roll Kings, Off Yonder Wall, 1997 Fat Possum Records,
$17. How in the heck this didn't become known as the greatest album
of 1997, I'll never know. This thing rocks juke-joint-style from start
to finish. (You may find yourself sweating by the end like a Mississippi
bluesman in August.) Who needs a big band when you have a blues power
trio like Big Jack Johnson, Frank Frost and Sam Carr in the studio?!
This is the essential "modern Clarksdale sound" - big, electric
but never overplayed. (It also makes for an excellent guitar and drum
lesson...) 10 tracks:
- Frank Frost Blues
- That's Alright Mama
- Look Over Yonder Wall
- So Lonesome
- Baby Please Don't Go
- Fishin' Musician
- Fat Back
- Sitting on Top Of The World
- Have Mercy Baby
- I'm A Big Boy Now
