  • The Rough Guide to Delta Blues, Sounds from the Cottonfields of the Deep South, 2002 World Music Network, $16. If I were going to make myself a compilation of essential (and enjoyable) mostly-early Delta blues, this would pretty much be it. Almost all acoustic, this excellent CD includes pre-war heavyweights like Charley Patton and Robert Johnson PLUS obscure geniuses like Geechie Wiley and Alfred Lewis PLUS a handful of more modern Mississippi marvels like R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. (Makes a great introductory gift for new or future blues converts.) This is my best or second best title as far as sales go. 24 tracks:
  • R.L. Burnside - Jumper oOn The Line
  • Robert Johnson - Preaching Blues
  • MS Fred McDowell - Done Left Here
  • Charley Patton - High Water Everywhere
  • Son House - Walkin' blues
  • MS Sheiks - Sitting On Top Of The World
  • Muddy Waters - Country Blues
  • Asie Payton - Goin' Back To The Bridge
  • Geechie Wiley - Last Kind Words Blues
  • Robert Petway - Catfish Blues
  • Tommy Johnson - Cool Drink Of Water Blues
  • Robert Belfour - Black Mattie
  • Blind Joe Reynolds - Outside Woman Blues
  • Willie Brown - Future Blues
  • Louise Johnson - On The Wall
  • MS John Hurt - Stack O'Lee Blues
  • Alfred Lewis - MS Swamp Moan
