Joe
Louis Light -- Memphis legend.
Joe Light was a prisoner
before his was an artist. After a second round of jail time for armed
robbery, Light saw the light. He heard the voice of the Lord and saw a
vision. The voice told him right versus wrong, and a bird sent through
the bars on a window proved the voice was special. To convince Light of
the truth, the voice told him that he could think what he wanted the bird
to do. Light thought it. The bird did it. And Light left a life of crime
behind him. For a time, he did paintings of the "birdman." Basically,
a man's head with a bird on it that represented his transformation. After
a few years of experimenting, Light came up with a very recognizable artistic
style. He used bold black lines to contain larger areas of primary colors.
His simple drawings and paintings are quite riveting and have become favorites
with many folk art collectors. Joe Light passed away in late 2005. RIP.
