Blues Today Symposium hosted by Living Blues magazine:
- Friday, March 26, at 1:00 p.m., poet and scholar Tony Bolden will give the annual Early Wright Lecture at the Department of Archives and Special Collections Center on the third floor of the J.D. Williams Library on the University of Mississippi campus. Bolden will "provide a brief overview of the early history of funk, particularly as it relates to the blues idiom—Buddy Bolden, Bessie, Duke, as well as a few literary texts that are pertinent to the discussion."
- Following the Early Wright lecture, two archivists from the University of Georgia, Margaret Compton and Renna Tuten, will show two silent home movies shot on 8mm Kodachrome film stock dating to c.1942 and 1952 from the family of Rayburn Moore, son of Max Moore, founder of Interstate Grocery and creator King Biscuit Flour. The earlier film (4 minutes long) depicts Robert Junior Lockwood and Sonny Boy Williamson performing together on the porch of a country grocery store in Arkansas, and the later film (12 minutes long) shows segments from a 1952 bus tour through Arkansas with Williamson and various King Biscuit Time band members performing.
- The Symposium concludes with a performance by singer Cassandra Wilson at the Gertrude Castellow Ford Center on the University of Mississippi campus. All Symposium lectures are free and open to the public. Tickets for the Cassandra Wilson performance must be purchased separately and may be obtained by contacting the Ford Center box office at (662) 915-7411.

JUKE JOINT AND EVENT DIRECTIONS:

- PO MONKEY'S LOUNGE, NEAR MERIGOLD, MS: From Clarksdale, take Hwy 61 South 29.4 miles to Pemble Road [green street sign is missing; during daytime, you can see white "Pemble Farms" sign in field at turn-off; if you get to LEFThand "Merigold" exit, you've gone too far. In that case, turn around and take what will then be your SECOND left. Then...]. Go RIGHT on Pemble. Take immediate left fork in the road which is gravel. Approx. 1 1/4 mile down on left.

- DO DROP INN JUKE JOINT IN SHELBY, MS: From Clarksdale, take hwy 61 south 25 min or so to Shelby exit. Take exit, and drive to stoplight. Turn right and cross the tracks. Take second left and park across from club.

- OTHA TURNER MEMORIAL PICNIC, SENATOBIA, MS: Get off of I-55 on the Senatobia exit and turn away from town down Highway 4. Go approximately three Miles down that road to Gravel Springs Road (the second road to the right on 4 from Senatobia). Turn right on Gravel Springs Road. Go to the second 4-way stop and turn left (that road is OB McClinton Road) Follow that road about a half mile and the Turner's Picnic is on the right there will be lots of cars & people gathered there.
