Compilations
and Soundtracks:
- Hammer
in the Delta, A Collection of Music from the Mississippi Delta,
2003 Clarksdale Habitat for Humanity, $15. Includes several Clarksdale
area acts.
Also recommended:
- Charley
Patton, Screamin' & Hollerin' the Blues, Revenant,
$175. The most incredible box set in blues includes 7 CDs, wonderful
"78 record" style packaging, detailed new liner notes, a reprint
of John Fahey's 1970 biography, Paramount stickers, reprints of the
Chicago Defender record ads and more! The ultimate gift for the Delta
blues fan. NOTE: This is becoming harder to stock...
- Jessie
Mae Hemphill, Shake It Baby, 2003 HMG/Highwater, $16.
Great CD brings together the best of her two previous full length albums
- plus a few previously unreleased cuts. Just wonderful. Who says hill
country or delta blues is only a man's music!?
- Buddy Guy,
Blues Singer, 2003 Silvertone, $18. Buddy goes all
acoustic with Jimbo Mathus and special guests like Clapton and B.B.
Great old Delta songs. Beautifully updated. (Sure Tower Records probably
has it for cheaper, but it is much cooler to buy it from a wee independent
in the Delta... Don't you agree?)
- R.L. Burnside,
First Recordings, 2003 Fat Possum Records, $16. Thanks
to the boys in Oxford, MS, the amazing George Mitchell field recordings
of the late 1960s are back with a vengeance. R.L. recorded these 14
tracks over the course of a few evenings after returning from field
work. Beautiful stuff. (We've also got the George Mitchell MS Fred McDowell,
Joe Callicott and Furry Lewis stuff on FP. Also newly back in print
with extra stuff!)
- Jr. Kimbrough
& the Soul Blues Boys, All Night Long, 1995 Fat
Possum Records, $16. Just an "old" favorite. Close your eyes
and for a moment Juniors' juke joint rises from the ashes. As our British
tourist friends might say, "brilliant!"
- Otha Turner.
We usually stock 2 different Otha CDs ($16 ea.). Email for details.
- ALSO:
We stock plenty of the must-have early Delta blues stuff by guys and
gals like Son House, Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, Mississippi John
Hurt, Skip James, Muddy Waters, Furry Lewis, Bukka White, Honeyboy Edwards,
Johnny Shines, Bessie Smith, Memphis Minnie, etc. Just ask!
- PLUS:
We stock swell self-produced Mississippi blues CDs by some of the areas's
younger acoustic players, including David Durham, Terry "Harmonica"
Bean, Steve "Blues Traveling" Cheseborough, Mr.
Tater, etc.. Most are around $15 each.
