John
Henry Toney -- "country" and proud.
John Henry Toney is
in his mid-70s now. As an African-American living in rural Alabama, he
has a tough way to go at times. But he's made it through and kept his
friends laughing all the way. After he discovered a turnip that looked
like it had a face, Mr. Toney drew it as proof of it's unusual personality.
After he and his friends had a good laugh, the honorary mayor of the town
put a big price on it and stuck it in his wife's antique shop. As fate
would have it, some art collectors came through and bought it. Suddenly,
Toney had a new career. Since then, he has kept busy with his markers,
drawing scenes of youth and of his wild imagination. Oh yeah... He once
told us about drawing as a young man. He once drew his boss and got fired.
He stopped drawing after that. Till now, anyway. He also told me that
I looked just like his boss.
