Think that juke joints like Junior's old place in the North Mississippi Hill Country region were just for the men? Guess again. Jessie Mae Hemphill was tough. And good. Damn good. She grew up in her community's blues, gospel and fife & drum traditions, and arguably, this is the best showcase of what she absorbed. (Unfortunately, I didn't get to know her until after a stroke had taken away her guitar-playing ability, but she was still tough — sitting in her wheelchair with her yappy little dog and her .38.)
